Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots membership organization that works for economic, racial, environmental and social justice. Our current initiatives include climate justice, state funding for public schools, quality, affordable health coverage, housing justice, worker and gender justice, mass incarceration, democracy (including public financing of elections and voting rights), progressive tax reform, and protecting the social safety net. Citizen Action works to empower low and moderate income New Yorkers through grassroots organizing, training and leadership development, lobbying, coalition-building and supporting through elections candidates who share our issue positions and worldview. We have eight chapters or affiliates throughout New York State, each with local leadership, organizing staff, and an active, diverse volunteer base ready to act on a moment’s notice, including in the Capital District. Our strong local affiliates, are one of our key strengths and contributions to the coalitions we are active in,
Fundamental to Citizen Action’s climate work in the Capital District is to combine local grassroots organizing with a statewide campaign around climate justice and just transition called NY Renews. We help local communities, particularly low income communities and communities of color, fight local threats, while garnering support for statewide mobilization efforts aimed at state government in Albany.
As of early 2022, these are our major climate justice projects based in the Capital District:
Mobilization of Capital Region residents around statewide climate campaigns: Citizen Action is a member of the Steering Committee of NY Renews, a coalition of nearly 200 organizations that fights for 100% clean energy, climate justice and worker protections. NY Renews was responsible for the passage of the landmark 2019 state climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and is now fighting to make sure the state aggressively implements the new law and receives adequate funding. We lead NY Renews’ grassroots mobilizing and educational efforts in the Capital Region. We are also a leader of Climate Can't Wait 2022, which is planning a major mobilization for climate action by NYS for April of 2022.
Sheridan Hollow: Citizen Action is a key leader of the Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy (SHARE), which successfully stopped New York State from adding a fracked gas turbine project to an existing facility in Albany’s Sheridan Hollow neighborhood, and is now working for 100% renewables at the site and the surrounding neighborhood.
Albany Loop Pipeline: Citizen Action, working with Stop the NY Fracked Gas Pipeline (SNYFGP), in late 2021 successfully killed the 7.3 mile Albany Loop Pipeline proposed by National Grid.
Community Climate Mobilization and Public Outreach: Citizen Action does significant advocacy training on climate policy and organizing skills, and co-founded the Capital Area Climate Network (CACN), a network of climate groups that promotes information sharing and strategy planning.
