Citizen Action works to empower low and moderate income New Yorkers through grassroots organizing, training and leadership development, lobbying, coalition-building and supporting through elections candidates who share our issue positions and worldview. We have eight chapters or affiliates throughout New York State, each with local leadership, organizing staff, and an active, diverse volunteer base ready to act on a moment’s notice, including in the Capital District. Our strong local affiliates, are one of our key strengths and contributions to the coalitions we are active in, including climate. We welcome you to stop into our office at 94 Central Avenue in Albany, which houses our Capital District Chapter and statewide staff!

Campaign Details: Fundamental to Citizen Action’s climate work in the Capital District is to combine local grassroots organizing with a statewide campaign around climate justice and just transition called NY Renews. We help local communities, particularly low income communities and communities of color, fight local threats, while garnering support for statewide mobilization efforts aimed at state government in Albany.

As of early 2020, these are our major climate justice projects based in the Capital District:

NY Renews: Citizen Action is a member of the Steering Committee of NY Renews, a coalition of nearly 200 organizations that fights for 100% clean energy, climate justice and worker protections. NY Renews was responsible for the passage of the landmark 2019 state climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and is now fighting to make sure the state aggressively implements the new law. We lead NY Renews’ grassroots mobilizing and educational efforts in the Capital Region.

Sheridan Hollow: Citizen Action is a key leader of the Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy (SHARE), which successfully stopped New York State from adding a fracked gas turbine project to an existing facility in Albany’s Sheridan Hollow neighborhood, and is now working for 100% renewables at the site.

Albany Loop Pipeline: Citizen Action is working with Stop the NY Fracked Gas Pipeline (SNYFGP) to fight the proposed 7.3 mile Albany Loop Pipeline extension.

Community Climate Mobilization and Public Outreach. Citizen Action does significant advocacy training on climate policy and organizing skills, and co-founded the Capital Area Climate Network (CACN), a network of climate groups that promotes information sharing and strategy planning.
